WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Workshop #1: Guitar Workshop and concert-workshop format

In this informal interactive workshop, Muriel Anderson will intersperse performance with discussion. Every participant will have the opportunity to ask questions, to explore techniques for arranging, composing, and musicianship, inspirations behind compositions and her approach to music. Muriel will also have some new hands-on techniques, riffs, or tunes to teach.  Open to guitarists of all levels. Fee includes  a free set of GHS strings.
You may bring (optional): tape recorder, small video camera, guitar, pen & paper.

Workshop #2: Arranging in the key of D

Cool ways to arrange tunes in the key of D, tiered for easy-intermediate through advanced-intermediate. Feel free to bring guitar, pencil, tape recorder or video camera if you like.  Workshop fee includes handouts and 2 free sets of GHS strings.

Workshop #3: Fun and Flashy Fingerstyle (Intermediate Fingerstyle)

Learn to play cool and easy fingerstyle solos in the style of Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Paul Simon, with Muriel's sense of finesse and style.

Workshop #4: Connecting The Heart To The Hands

Explore the techniques and philosophy to better playing and becoming a more sensitive musician. Muriel's open-minded attention to detail allows her to connect with the core or emotion in each style of music. Class includes harmonic techniques and principles that can be applied to interpreting, arranging and composing.

Workshop #5: Fingerstyle and Flatpicking Basics

You can make your playing sound smoother and more professional, even if you are just a beginner! You will learn several simplified solos, including the Peanuts theme. This individualized workshop will cover hand technique in the context of learning new music.

Q: Can you give us the difference between a masterclass and a workshop?
For master classes, performers generally audition first or are known by their teachers, so someone can chose appropriate players (they don't need to be all advanced, just so it's interesting for the audience as well). Performers pay a higher price to participate than the auditors.  I like to allocate 20 min for each performer. And leave some time for general questions also.

For a workshop, all pay the same, and it's open for questions from the audience. Often I will go around the room and ask what people would like to get from the workshop. I tailor the workshop accordingly, so everyone goes away with some new knowledge and techniques they can really use. The the number of participants in a workshop is limited to the size of the room. If there is space I encourage students to bring their guitars so they can try out the new riffs and techniques right there. It's also OK to bring a recorder or video camera so they can listen again at home.
