Bryan M and Dim Sharp

Day 39 Friends in Rockland

Rob and Marcia were taking their motorized dinghy to shore about the same time we were getting into our rowing dingy, so they offered us a tow. The first person we came across on shore was none other than Captain Jim Sharp, creaor of the Sail, Power and Steam Museum, and former owner of the Stephen Tabor windjammer, amongst many other schooners. At age 91 he is still working every day, hosting lobster bakes for bus loads of tourists. He swept up Bryan to build the wood bonfire to cook the lobsters on, then to attach webbing to a bridge from his childrens museum. We had bought Jim Sharp’s book on our last visit here in Rockland. I wrote a song about the Taber and her current owner Captain Noah for the sailing dream CD which mentions Captain Sharp. I gave him a copy which he promptly played and  was tickled to hear his name in the song.

When we got back to our sailboat, Roland who we met on a neighboring boat at Swan’s Island and owns the Landing marina, came by and invited us for a Margarita. We greatly enjoyed the conversation! On our way back we stopped by to visit Gordon Bok on his houseboat, His music was the reason we ended up first visiting Rockland, where we have made many friends including Niko Apollonio who has since moved his guitar building operation further inland.

There is a huge industrial ship repair facility that was releasing a huge vessel. They kindly asked us to move to a different mooring out of the way of the ship, and we found ourselves once again briefly on Gordon Bok’s mooring.
