We arrived at Block Island in time for a pesto dinner made from the basil from our garden, and to hear the chorus of ship horns and conch shells blown at the moment the sun touches the horizon. Then a full moon joined the mast lights for a calm night at harbor.

We took off at 4:30 am, watching the full moon disappear into the horizon, as we passed Shinnicock, then the sun rise over low clouds. Dolphin came alongside the boat and we saw a whale in the distance. Passing Montauk now, heading for Block Island.

First day of this year’s sailing trip, Cap’n Bryan and I leaving Fire Island Inlet, heading to Maine and Nova Scotia on his Grampian 30. We saw a whale off the coast of Long Island, and anchored at Moriches Inlet for a satisfying steak, panfried veg & potatoes dinner, and a few hours sleep.
