Day 22 Caught in Seaweed and Lobster Pots

The waves were much more calm today as we sailed from Little Cranberry, along an increasingly more wild coast, to a snug little harbor south of Jonesport. We were doing 6 knots with the mainsail and spinnaker and Bryan was just pointing out some seals when we heard a clunk, and the boat slowed noticeably. We had picked up a lobster buoy. I steered the boat into the wind and Bryan wrestled down the sails. He leaned way over the stern, with me holding onto his ankle, and freed us of the pot. The lobster pots and partially submerged rocks became thicker as we zig-zagged towards the narrow bay where we were to anchor for the night. As we motored close to our chosen spot I heard an unusual sound and there was a momentary mechanical burning smell. Again the boat slowed, and this time Bryan had to don his wetsuit and get in the frigid water to untangle a huge mat of seaweed that was caught in the prop. Whew, the motor seems ok. I prepared dinner and we enjoyed calm, still waters for the first time in many days. The completely wild little cove is ringed with densely packed pine trees sprouting right from the granite shoreline.
